Fostering greyhounds in Hokitika
Janice works with May Hounds, a group that helps transition greyhounds from working life to pet life. As working dogs, greyhounds have unique lives that are unlike pets. For example, they’re raised with their littermates for many months longer than other breeds, and they live in kennels with dozens of fellow greyhounds around them all the time. This makes them very social and not used to being alone. Suddenly finding themselves the lone dog in a household would be too much of a change, even with a loving family. Janice is an expert in helping greyhounds make this change as well as getting them used to new things like other dog breeds, busy roads and more. While every greyhound she fosters is different, her goal is always the same – matching the right greyhound to the right forever home.
Like all New Zealanders living and working with animals, greyhound people deserve a fair go. New Zealand’s greyhound sector has been put on notice, but the Kiwi greyhound community is small and isn’t having their voices heard. They deserve a fair chance to show how they work and how much they love and care for their dogs. We need support from everyday Kiwis. Help us share real stories from the real people living and working with greyhounds today.
